Conquering Two UTMB 25K Trail Races: Lessonsfrom California and Pennsylvania

As a runner and coach, I believe every race teaches a lesson. In 2026, I had the opportunity to
complete two challenging 25-kilometer trail races that tested my endurance, mental strength, and
race strategy.

UTMB Canyons 25K

On April 24, 2026, I completed the UTMB Canyons 25K in Auburn, California. Part of the
prestigious UTMB World Series, this race featured approximately 2,500 feet of elevation gain over
scenic but demanding trails. From steep climbs to fast descents, every mile required focus,
patience, and smart pacing. The historic trails of Auburn reminded me that trail running is about
adapting to the terrain, not fighting it.

Rothrock 25K

On May 17, 2026, I took on the Rothrock 25K in Pennsylvania. This race presented an entirely
different challenge. With nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain, rocky technical trails, relentless
climbs, and rugged descents, Rothrock pushed me to my limits. Every step demanded
concentration, and even a close encounter with a rattlesnake was a reminder that nature always
deserves respect. Reaching the finish line just before the cutoff made the accomplishment even
more meaningful.

More Than a Finish Line

The most unforgettable moment wasn’t on the trail—it was at the finish.
Seeing my wife and my two sons waiting for me after hours on the course made every climb, every
mile, and every challenge worthwhile. Sharing that finish line with my children made the experience
truly special. I hope they saw that perseverance, discipline, and believing in yourself can carry you
through even the toughest obstacles.

As a father, those moments matter more than any medal. I want my children to know that goals are
achieved one step at a time and that success comes from consistency, resilience, and never giving
up.

What I Learned

  • Respect the elevation—hill training matters.
  • Let the trail set your pace instead of forcing it.
  • Practice your nutrition and hydration before race day.
  • Build strength along with endurance.
  • Mental resilience is just as important as physical fitness.
  • Celebrate every finish line because each one tells a story.

Trail running has made me a stronger athlete, a better coach, and a better example for my family.
I’m grateful for every challenge, every lesson, and every finish line, and I look forward to helping
others achieve goals they once thought were impossible.

Dream. Believe. Achieve.
