London Marathon 2022 — Running With Identity

London was never just another marathon for me. After COVID, after losing my father in April 2021, and after a long period of emotional distance from running, London felt like a return—not just to racing, but to purpose. I signed up through Marathon Tours, knowing London would take place in October 2022 instead of its usual April date. What made it harder was the timing: London and Chicago were scheduled one week apart. I understood the risk. Physically and mentally. But at this stage of my journey, fear no longer made decisions for me.

I trained for London with one clear goal: to break 4 hours. I felt fit, focused, and ready. I wanted this race to reflect the work I had put in during one of the most difficult periods of my life. Race day in London was electric. The crowds were loud, constant, and deeply supportive. Running through historic streets, past landmarks I had once visited with my father in 2004, brought back memories I wasn’t prepared for—but grateful to feel.

I wore “Bangladesh” on my shirt. That choice mattered. Hearing strangers call out my name and my country reminded me why I run. It connected identity, heritage, and purpose in a way few races ever have. Along the course, I met runners from all over the world. One of them was Chris, a runner in his 60s chasing a sub-3 marathon. His discipline and belief were inspiring and reminded me that limits are often self-imposed.

But I made a mistake. A rookie one. I started the race too fast. Confidence turned into impatience, and patience is everything in a marathon. By the later miles, the cost showed. The sub-4 goal slipped away—not because I wasn’t capable, but because I didn’t respect the distance. Still, I ran with joy. After the race, I celebrated simply—with naan and chicken tikka masala. Familiar food. Comfort. Gratitude.

London gave me more than a finish time. It gave me perspective. I crossed the finish line knowing I hadn’t hit my goal—but I had gained something better. Peace.

Lesson from Marathon 6

The marathon always teaches you something. Sometimes it teaches humility before it gives you speed.
